Project editing

Why do I need a project editor?

Project editing is the process of seeing a book through its various stages from first-draft manuscript to passing colour proofs for publication. This generally involves the following:

  • Copy-editing the manuscript
  • Working with the author to resolve queries or to chase up any missing items
  • Preparing preliminary pages and running heads
  • Checking accuracy of references
  • Checking illustrations, captions and illustration lists / suggesting suitable illustrations and signing off final illustation choices
  • Proofreading or sourcing a proofreader
  • Liaising with designers
  • Checking colour proofs
  • Approving for publication

One of the really bad things you can do to your writing is to dress up the vocabulary, looking for long words because you're maybe a little bit ashamed of your short ones.
