Proofreading

Why do I need a proofreader?

Proofreading is the process of checking copy and marking up any errors. This is usually carried out on proofs or on-screen after a text has been copy-edited and updated by the typesetter/designer.

Proofreading will check for the following:

  • Spelling
  • Grammar
  • Punctuation
  • Misused words
  • Mixed tenses
  • Sense
  • Design inconsistencies
  • Incorrect capitalisation
  • Ensuring specific house styles/style guides are followed
  • Formatting problems
  • Double spaces
  • 'Widows' and 'orphans'

All the words I use in my stories can be found in the dictionary - it's just a matter of arranging them into the right sentences.
- Somerset Maugham
